2nd Grade Spotlight: Birthday Boxes!
Each grade completes a service project during the year, to give the students a way to support the local community. Mrs. Janelle Spolyar’s 2nd grade class’ project was to create ‘birthday boxes’.
The 2nd graders were excited to create birthday boxes to be donated to several local food pantries because they believe birthdays are meant to be celebrated – and falling on hard financial times shouldn’t be a reason to not celebrate them. Each student got to take a disposable baking dish and put inside all the items needed to make a cake – mix, frosting, candles, a birthday banner, and even a can of sprite for families who need an egg-substitute. The students enjoyed getting to make their own box and assemble it for themselves by choosing what cake and frosting flavors to pair together.
The boxes were given to a couple shelters and pantries in the area, one of which keeps a list of birthdays and can distribute the boxes as birthdays come up. The hope is that these birthday boxes help spread joy and help families continue to celebrate with each other and create great birthday memories.
