The day before Lent began, the students of St. John’s were very active in helping to prepare for Ash Wednesday.
The St. John’s version of a Mardi Gras parade includes, as one would expect from a parade, fun jazz music blaring through the halls. The smiling students depart their classrooms and parade up and down the halls showing off the butterfly they have drawn to the staff and parents in the hallway. The parade ends in the gymnasium where there is a short time of worship. The students pray and then sing Alleluia as they put the butterflies, symbolic for the alleluia’s we don’t say during worship in Lent, into a chest to lock them away for the season. These butterflies will be brought out again on Easter when we resume worship with the word ‘alleluia’ and will decorate the walls of the sanctuary.
After school, a handful of students got to help Pastor Albers burn palms from last year’s Palm Sunday service. These ashes were then used during the Ash Wednesday services. These students had fun getting to burn the palms and be part of the Lenten preparations.
