Each year the preparations for Lent and the lead up to Easter are numerous. This year students from St. John’s stepped in to help Pastor Albers get ready!

On Shrove Tuesday (the day before Ash Wednesday), all of the students joined together in our own Mardi Gras parade, processing from one end of the building to the other with the butterflies they had wonderfully designed and decorated. Eventually the loud procession made its way to the gym where there was a somber time of “burying” the ‘alleluia butterflies’ in a chest, as a reminder that we do not say Alleluia or certain praises during Lent. Lent is a penitential and reflective season that encourages worshippers to eagerly anticipate the joy of the Easter season and to give praise to God for all that Christ Jesus accomplished in his death and resurrection.

Then, after school, several students Ben, Aurora, Maisie and Miranda helped Pastor at the start of March by burning palms from last year’s Palm Sunday celebration. These ashes were then gathered together and were used during the Imposition of Ashes during Ash Wednesday services.
