St. John’s Student Council Helps Teach Students About Voting

Our K-8 students engaged in a fantastic learning opportunity that emphasized the importance of civic participation and the process of elections. Most of the upper grades received a week worth of lessons in Social Studies focused on elections, the electoral process and the executive branch of government. Younger grades learned about civic responsibility and why American citizens should vote. Students had to register to vote and show identification. Kindergarten and first graders voted on their favorite snacks and pets, while students in grades 2-8 cast their votes for their favorite G-rated Christmas movie to be played by the school. The older students participated in a private voting booth, assisted by judges or members of the Student Council, ensuring a smooth process. After casting their votes, all students received a cup saying “Be the Change you wish to see in the world” and an “I Voted” sticker, while our kindergarten and first graders proudly wore crowns that said “I Voted.” We ensured that each student was registered before voting, and the results were tallied and approved by the Principal, reflecting the process of the electoral college. This experience at St. Johns taught valuable lessons about democracy and community involvement.
