When Principal Berndt went to enroll St. John’s Lutheran School in this year’s Scripps National Spelling Bee she discovered the regional partner had backed out, leaving La Porte without a Regional Spelling Bee.
That’s when Dr. Lipscomb and Pastor Albers got to work gathering information and working to find an alternative. Sauer’s Buick GMC was willing to step up as a funding partner and last year’s Regional Partner, Kankakee Valley REMC has also stepped up, but at about 1/3rd the amount.
The City of La Porte will also be providing the Civic Auditorium for the event, waiving the usual nonprofit fee. The result is that St. John’s Lutheran Church and School will officially be the Regional Partner this year!
Pastor Albers signed the Regional Partnership agreement knowing he still needs to find one or two more local community partners. The total cost of the event is about $7,000, and the three partners will cover about two-thirds of that cost. He still needs to raise about $2,000 to close the gap. If you know of a local business or other partner that would like to help fund this year’s bee, let Pastor Albers know ASAP!
Pastor Albers also needs help organizing and staffing the event. The Regional Spelling Bee is tentatively scheduled for THURSDAY, MARCH 13 at the CIVIC AUDITORIUM.
The La Porte Regional includes 19 schools located in La Porte County, one from St. Joseph County (Olive Elementary in New Carlisle), and two schools from Porter County. Starke County is also in our region, but currently no schools from Starke County are enrolled. More information about the regional bee, the venue, and various details will be released in the coming weeks.
The current regional champion, Nolan Roule, is a 2024 Graduate from St. John’s and is currently a freshman at South Central High School. Thanks to the Regional Partner, the champion from the La Porte Regional Spelling Bee and a chaperone will be able to be a part of Bee Week in our nation’s capital at the end of May this year.
Reach out to Pastor Albers if you can volunteer at the event, or plan to come to cheer on Katie (far right in the photo), our St. John’s Spelling Bee Champ!
