St. John’s has been blessed to receive several newcomers who want to know more about who we are and what we confess. Since the end of July, the small group has been meeting weekly and exploring the basics of our confession.

The first weeks of study focused on some uniquely Lutheran “fundamentals” and our continual pursuit of “orthodoxy” (literally, right praise or teaching). Some believe that all Christians are mostly the same. The issues that divide Christian denominations from one another are often quite substantial and meaningful.

In recent weeks the group has moved to a review of the Apostles’ Creed and our faith in God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. It’s been interesting to dig deeper into what we might only just read or say by memory in a weekly worship service.

The last two topics for study will be a review of the Lord’s Prayer and the Lord’s Supper/Communion. The first is a fabulous review not only of the topic of prayer but also of the life of a Christian. The second will prepare the group to more eagerly and appropriately receive the Lord’s Supper.

Of the group one couple recently had their children baptized, and another had her twins baptized at St. John’s. Another is a young adult who wants to be baptized.  The group usually meets on Wednesday evenings beginning at 6 pm.  That schedule may change in September, so if you want to join the group be sure to check on the time and day of the next gathering.
