Pastor Albers and Debra will once again be hosting a Passover Seder Meal for their St. John’s family and friends. For nearly his entire ministry Pastor and Debra Albers have hosted a demonstration seder meal for any who want to learn more about the Passover meal and a little insight into what may have happened the night Jesus was betrayed and arrested.
Decades ago Pastor Albers asked a local rabbi to help him plan such a meal at the church he served near Lake Charles, Louisiana. The rabbi asked only that Pastor Albers stay as faithful as possible to the traditional meal he celebrated with his family and congregation. “Don’t make it into a Christian worship service. This is our covenant meal. Learn from the Seder something of your own covenant meal, the Lord’s Supper.”
This is a ‘demonstration’ seder meal and follows a pattern in the “modern” era, the past several centuries. So the meal is certainly not the same as what Jesus would have celebrated with his disciples, but there are likely significant similarities. Debra is also familiar with the traditional recipes and so the education is both informational and experiential as we dine.
The Seder is the covenant meal of the Jewish people, which began annually in Exodus, but it also gives us a look at the roots of our own covenant meal, the Lord’s Supper. We read through the Haggadah, the liturgy for the evening, and eat the Passover meal recognizing the fact that it is not a particularly “Christian” celebration. It is, however, a gathering of Christian people and, due to that, we will look for the promise of the Messiah throughout the celebration.
