On March 13 St. John’s hosted the La Porte Community Regional Spelling Bee! There were 20 schools from across the area were represented by students ranging from 3rd to 8th grades.

Various family and friends filled the audience to cheer on their students, and donations were given to help the winner afford the cost of travelling to Washington, DC, in May to represent our community at the National Spelling Bee.

Over the course of 10 rounds, the Bee narrowed down to the top three spellers. It was so neck-and-neck that the top students had to start a couple new rounds to determine the champion and runners-up. St. John’s own Katie Jedrysek made it all the way to 5th place!

After the competition last year’s regional winner, Nolan Roule (who graduated from St. John’s in 2024 and currently attends South Central High School), gave out the trophies to the three winners (the last picture shared below).

This event was made possible by our additional sponsors: Kankakee Valley REMC, Sauers Buick/GMC, the city of La Porte, and Modern Woodmen Fraternal Financial. The La Porte Civic Center was a great place to host the event assisting St. John’s in support of these students and their area schools. The event was also made possible by the great number of volunteers from both the church and school, who helped with setup and running the event.

Thank you to all who supported this endeavor to support the school and this region of strong spellers!
