On Saturday, August 17, a crew of volunteers from church and school were able to assemble our new preschool playground equipment which had been delivered nearly one month earlier! Storms delayed the site work for the new play area but by Friday, August 16, members of the Board of Trustees had excavated the area and dug holes in which to place the equipment.
On Saturday morning a crew of a dozen volunteers assembled the equipment and were filling post holes with concrete by noon. Since that time another church member delivered the 30 tons of stone that will be needed to provide the sub-base for the area. By the end of September, we hope to have another vendor install the pour-in-place rubber surface that has become so common in play areas throughout La Porte and the region.
Speaking of the rubber surface … thanks to an additional grant from the First Source Foundation ($12,000) and some additional generous donations (more than $6,500), we can install this rubber surface, as compared to the more typical pine bark mulch surface. This rubber pour-in-place surface is safer for children and much cleaner, making the play area usable immediately following a rain storm, without the danger of tracking in pieces of pine bark mulch or soiling play clothes.
YOU CAN STILL HELP!
Trustees have put the sub-base in place, but it now needs to be COMPACTED, and FENCE POSTS need to be set and PAINTED. If you can help, please contact the school office. Work will be completed as soon as possible as volunteers are available.
In the fall of 2023, St. John’s Lutheran School received a Health Foundation of LaPorte Grant to install a new Preschool Playground. Mrs. Berndt led a planning team that met periodically throughout the school year to kickstart the planning process.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has contributed to this project. Your generosity is truly appreciated and will help create a safe and enjoyable play area for our youngest students.
Thank you for your continued support!
