This summer we were made aware of several requirements for our school building related to indoor air quality standards. With a new gymnasium floor and plans underway to repair as much as possible related to water intrusion around the gymnasium roof, the Board of Trustees and School Board must also make appropriate plans and policy changes this fall.
HVAC COIL CLEANING
When is the last time you had the COILS on your air conditioner cleaned? Some people take care of this as part of ongoing preventive maintenance. Turns out that 410 IAC 33-5 (IAC: Indiana Administrative Code) requires a written policy for maintaining our school’s HVAC systems which must include an ANNUAL cleaning of the HVAC coils. In our case all of these are located in a roof top unit.
INDOOR AIR QUALITY (IAQ) POLICIES
This same administrative code requires that we create (and follow) several policies designed to improve our school’s IAQ. These include policies related to chemical storage (like cleaning supplies), animals in our classrooms and idling of vehicles close to entrances. Our interim principal and Pastor Albers have prepared a draft policy for consideration of our School Board and Board of Trustees.
INDOOR AIR QUALITY (IAQ) COORDINATOR
This same administrative code also requires that we identify an IAQ Coordinator and make sure that person’s name and contact information are posted on our website. The Board of Trustees will take action on this at its next meeting.
TOBACCO FREE CAMPUS
Recently Interim Principal Greg Alberding noticed the lack of policies in our student handbook that enforces a Tobacco Free Campus for our school. He is gathering sample policies to be considered by our School Board in the coming months.
