At the beginning of July, it became clear that the gym floor could no longer be adequately cleaned, even by going beyond the usual numerous summer cleaning steps. In early July the independent contractor who was to clean the carpet determined that the visible mold growth would likely return, even after cleaning. Laboratory tests indicated that the elevated levels of mold growth was limited to the gymnasium (it did not even extend to the hallways immediately contiguous to the gymnasium). St. John’s leadership responded positively to this obstacle and quickly created a plan. Within mere days, ideas were shared and bids assessed in order to make the best plan for our students. By July 18 a contract to remove the carpet and prepare the surface for a new floor was approved by the Trustees (approx. $25,000). By the next Monday, July 21, the Trustees approved a contract for the new floor surface and funds to complete the project was immediately approved by the Governing Board (an additional $60,000).
Work began by Monday, July 28. The contractor completed work on Friday, August 8.
The Details
The base of the gym is a concrete floor. The previous floor was direct-glue carpet. The new floor is a high-build elastomeric coating through Matrix Coating Solutions, Inc. that adds a bit of “protection” for students when they slide or fall while playing. The additional benefit is the ability to quickly remove any water that may accumulate while we continue to search for a permanent fix to the ongoing challenges with water infiltration.
Upcoming Fundraiser
This upgrade is NOT without cost! The treasurer made the funds available in an emergency, but we need to REPLACE these funds. The fundraising campaign (including some events, maybe) will aim to raise $150k, providing for this cost and some funds to help with repairs to our leaking walls, flashing, and roof drains.
