Last spring, our principal and pastor submitted grants through the Healthcare Foundation of LaPorte (HFL) … by Mrs. Berndt for the school and Pastor Albers for the church … applying for new AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators).  Our grants were approved! And after some supply chain issues were resolved, news came that they were ready.

AED Sign

On November 3, Mrs. Berndt and our Director of Student Success, Dr. Tammy Lipscomb, attended the fall 2023 AED Celebration at the HFL’s Conference and Learning Center. A total of 27 AEDs, cabinets, and signage were provided to 15 grantees.  The school applied for and received five (5) device units and the church received two (2) units.

Attendees heard from several partners on the importance of CPR training, AEDs, and AED registration and maintenance. Partners included LaPorte County EMS, the City of La Porte Fire Department, and HFL Board member, Dr. Gary Wheeland.

The AED units are being installed throughout the school and church buildings. In the school, there is now an AED just inside Door #2, inside the south gym entrance, in the lobby outside the kitchen, inside the cafeteria, in the far middle school hallway, and one outside close to the playground (near Door #6). An additional AED will be placed in the church building, in addition to the one in the narthex.

St. John’s Church and School would like to thank the HFL for its generosity as we prepare for a whole host of emergencies.
