A series of articles on how the offerings given are used here at St. John’s:

How are offerings used for operational expenses for the church and school?

At the Voters’ Assembly on December 14 our Treasurer Dale Fischer reported on ongoing activity in our General Fund. Of the more than $1.6 million in expenses from our General Fund, less than $100,000 annually are for “Operations.”

On the church side of the equation the “big ticket” items in the operations category includes costs for insurance (property, liability and worker’s compensation), office supplies and worship supplies. Amounts for yard maintenance and snow removal depend very much on the season.

On the school side of the equation the largest amounts are for insurance and janitorial services and supplies. Costs for telephone service have dropped significantly with the advent of VOIP (voice over internet protocol) phones.

Three funds actually cover a good portion of the “operational” costs for our school ministry, supported mostly by a significant “Registration Fee” for each student. In our current structure, tuition (and scholarships) pay salary and benefit costs as well as utilities and ongoing repairs and maintenance.  This Registration Fee covers the costs of curriculum and books as well as the considerable technology needed for a 21st century education.

Next month: What’s Up with the Cost of our Utilities?
