What should the church do about “Hallmark Holidays?” These are holidays “perceived to exist primarily for commercial purposes rather than to commemorate a significant event” or religious festival?
Most we just mostly ignore: Boss’s Day, Groundhog Day, Sweetest Day and a host of others. But what about those that celebrate a unique gift of God… like Mother’s Day (May 11) and Father’s Day (June 15)?
At St. John’s, we observe these holidays with an extended prayer of thanks in each of our services that weekend, a Bidding Prayer that highlights all of those persons (our mothers and fathers) and the gift of God they are for us. The prayer includes a candle lighting ceremony, providing a time to highlight not only those with us in worship that day, but also to remember those mothers and fathers who are not able to come to church or who have died.
Be sure to invite your mother to join you for worship the weekend of May 10 & 11. Moms be sure to BE in worship that weekend! Plan also for the weekend of June 14 & 15, to help observe Father’s Day.
