According to the Pew Research Center fathers play a pivotal role in passing on the faith to their children. When Martin Luther first penned his Small Catechism, he included this simple introduction: as the head of the family should teach them in a simple way to his household (he assumed the “head of the family” was a husband and father.)
Each year at St. John’s, we observe Father’s Day with an extended prayer of thanks in each of our services that weekend, a Bidding Prayer that highlights all of those persons and the gift of God they are for us. The prayer includes a candle lighting ceremony, providing a time to highlight not only those with us in worship that day, but also to remember those mothers and fathers who are not able to come to church or who have died.
As God’s people in Christ we are called to give thanks for the many blessings we have received from God. We MUST give thanks for those extraordinary blessings … like our fathers. Be sure to invite your father to join you for worship the weekend of June 20 & 21 to help observe Father’s Day.
