Heading into the end of July it appeared as though our enrollment for the next school year would drop by 15 or more as compared to the start of the 23-24 school year. By the time some late enrollments were completed, we began the year with 114 K-8 students and another 27 preschool and pre-K students.
Nearly 1/3rd of these students are NEW to St. John’s this school year! Well, kind of … Most of our 15 kindergarten students graduated from St. John’s Pre-K program last spring. However, more than 30 students are brand new to St. John’s this year, more than 20% of our total student body.
Most interesting is that we also saw a significant number of new students in our middle school. Five of the 35 Middle school students are new to St. John’s, with three (3) new students in 4th & 5th grades. We “lost” (either by graduation or withdrawal) more than two dozen students, so these additions help to “fill” an otherwise underutilized classroom.
Our facility can probably manage as many as 185-190 students, with 160 in K-8th grades (an average of 18 students in nine classrooms). Our current staffing level could easily manage 135 K-8 students and another 30 preschool/pre-K students.
Thanks to generous scholarship support from St. John’s Lutheran Church and the Indiana Choice Scholarship program, there are almost no financial barriers for a student to attend St. John’s. There are even limited scholarships available for 4-year-old, pre-K students. It is still possible for a student to enroll at St. John’s for the 24/25 school year.
