Planetarium Visited St. John’s Just Before Thanksgiving…
As a result of its partnership with the Northern Indiana Education Service Center (NIESC), St. John’s Students visited a planetarium by simply walking down the hall to their school gym on November 20-21.
Digitarium systems offer advanced features to excite and engage students. Zoom in on and label any object; demonstrate annual motion; display constellations from many cultures; and much more. The Digitarium allowed for the display of celestial phenomena such as transits and eclipses; the display of orbits of the planets and moon showing annual motion, including retrograde planetary motion; and simulating the solar system over a two million-year time range.
The students were in awe of what they experienced, seeing a part of God’s creation that is not normally viewed up close. Most students indicated that they had never been to a planetarium and several were dancing with excitement.
The smallest Eagles made rocket sounds as we traveled from planet to planet. They enjoyed seeing the planets and getting to see them get closer. They enjoyed seeing the constellations and finding the people or animals in the shapes. There were several “oohs and ahhs” from the students and staff.
Older students visited the constellations and traveled to different planets, hearing stories from ancient times about what the stars represented. They also reviewed how important the night sky is for travel and throughout history. Several students now have “visit a planetarium” on their Christmas list!
We are thrilled our students had the opportunity to experience this Digitarium Planetarium System.
