College Go Week

Dr. Tammy Lipscomb continues to work to ensure that each of our Eagles’ students and families are successful now and in the future.

Staff, teachers, and students were all involved during College Go Week! The week of September 25th began with students ‘Dressed for Success’. The following days included students bringing in shoes to represent their future jobs, wearing neon colors because ‘Their Futures are Bright’ while ending with our Eagles wearing their favorite college garb.

Middle School students learned through Indiana Career Explorer that there is more than one way to reach their career goals. Families can use the Indiana Career Explorer website to find out more information. https://indianacareerexplorer.com/. 

During College Go Week, Dr. Lipscomb had the classes compete for the Best Attendance. Attendance does matter. Why, you ask? When a student misses two days of school a month, they will have missed a whole school year by graduation. When a student misses two days a month, they will have missed 30 hours of math for that school year. Missing 4 days a month equates to 120 hours of reading and writing for that school year. A teacher’s instruction is invaluable.

The adults working at SJLS got in on the College Go Week fun with a bulletin board Dr. Lipscomb designed. She asked that all employees of the St. John’s Lutheran Church and School bring in their high school, college, technical school, or any other type of graduation picture, to display in the main hallway of the school. 

Students and teachers alike stood in front of the bulletin board trying to figure out who was who. Smiles were big and the laughs were loud sharing in the joy of going down memory lane. “Thank you for asking me to be a part of it,” is only one of the many positive responses Dr. Lipscomb received.

To wrap up College Go Week for middle school, Dr. Lipscomb asked Mrs. Urban, from the AK Smith Training Center in Michigan City, to talk to our middle schoolers about the trades. Did you know when children are juniors and seniors attending a La Porte County high school, they can attend high school for half a day and then attend the AK Smith Training Center the other half of the day? Mrs. Urban explained that students can earn college credit from some of the courses by attending the training center, while some may even graduate from high school with an Associate’s Degree. Classes range from welding to catering. A field trip for the 7th and 8th graders next semester to this facility is in the works.
