Join us to watch ‘Bonhoeffer: Pastor. Spy. Assassin.’ and then discuss the film over dinner!

Join us on December 1st at 2 pm for a private showing of a new film at AMC 14 in Michigan City. A new movie coming out in theaters in November looks at the life, and death, of the German Lutheran theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Bonhoeffer became a pastor in 1931, serving in Berlin. In 1933, when Hitler rose to power in Germany, he spoke against Hitler’s political party and, in protest, moved to London to pastor two churches.

In both 1930 and 1939 he visited the US. When preparing to go back to Germany in 1939, his fellow pastors and friends in the States begged him to stay here to remain safe and continue his prolific writing for the sake of the church. However, Bonhoeffer remarked that “the Christian cannot simply take for granted the privilege of living among other Christians,” adding that Christians belong “in the midst of enemies. There they find their mission, their work.” He believed it his Christian duty to return home to Germany and help the anti-Nazi movement where he could, rather than hide from the position and call God had given him by staying in the States.

When he returned to Germany, he was part of a group that plotted the assassinations of several key Nazi leaders, including Hitler. Although Bonhoeffer was not part of the final attempt on Hitler’s life, and that attempt was not successful, he was arrested in 1943 and taken to Flossenbürg concentration camp, where he was killed in 1945.

The writings of Bonhoeffer give wonderful lessons on being in the Christian community and what it means to be a disciple. These are texts read by pastors and church-members alike, to study how the Bible applies to our daily lives.
