Some of the more “valuable” folks from St. John’s are part of the growing crew of volunteer workers who make time for completing important tasks that would otherwise require a paid contractor. Most recently the team completed some work that has been a problem for many years.
DOOR MAGNETIC HOLD OPENS
When our gymnasium and activities room was completed in 1979, the room that now houses our Eagle Care (aka after-school care) was designed as the public entrance to our gymnasium. Since that time it has been re-purposed to include tables and smaller chairs, and a storage area with games and other activities.
Three of the four doors into the gymnasium were equipped with magnetic hold opens to facilitate easier entrance and exit. A floor mounted unit was broken many years ago. When Pastor Albers ordered parts to replace a magnet on another door he saw a new floor unit that seemed to be an exact replacement of the broken one. For a small investment (less than $400) repairs were completed and the doors now function as designed!
GAS SUPPLY LINES
The two northern-most HVAC units that heat and cool our school’s front hallway and church offices have had some problems in the last few years. We have had intermittent problems with units not heating. Service techs came out and the error code indicated “low gas volume.” Turns out the gas pipe is undersized. A relatively simple fix, but one that requires several hours of time.
Our crack team of workers has replaced the pipe, increasing the size of the pipe appropriately. What would have been a repair costing $1,000 or more for a paid contractor, required the investment of only about $100 in parts, especially since one of the workers had all of the fittings required for the job sitting in his workshop.
NEW WORKERS WELCOME
Recently a new worker, Paul, joined the crew. Paul and his spouse moved from the area to Texas several years ago and have recently returned to La Porte. Paul joins a crew of five others led by Al Vollmer who come together on Tuesday mornings to complete a list of projects identified by our school staff and others. If you’re able to join this group, contact Pastor Albers to get connected with Al.
