September was packed full of wonderful events at the school! It was a fast and fun way to start the school year. Below are some details and photos of the events.
Bible gifting
The Board of Elders gifted Bibles to each 3rd grade student and copies of Luther’s Small Catechism to each 5th grade student. These books will be theirs to own and keep – they can take them home during the summer breaks to read and will get to keep them when they graduate from St. John’s. The elders feel it is important for students to own these books to help them take ownership of their individual faith as they grow in knowledge and love for the Scriptures during their religion classes.
Scholastic Book Fair
This year we will choose to host two different book fairs, rather than the same one twice. It has been a few years since Scholastic has been at St. John’s, and it seemed like the students enjoyed it. In January, during National Lutheran Schools Week, the PaperPie bookfair (that students have grown accustomed to) will be at St. John’s. Hopefully this variety offers more options of interesting books for our young readers.
Grandparent’s Day
There was an amazing turn out for Grandparents Day! Students and their grandparent or special friend got to attend chapel together and each grade gave a presentation about grandparents. Afterward, everyone got to attend the book fair, tour their students classrooms and enjoy donuts and fruit together. It was a bustling morning of making memories and we hope that all the special friends who attended had a great time with their students. Thank you to all the church members who volunteered to spend the morning with students who didn’t have a guest.
School Carnival
The school carnival was a great success, and God blessed us with the perfect weather for the evening! Thank you to all the volunteers from NEST and especially our 6th grade teacher Lisa Vaillancourt for the many months of preparation and planning. Students got to enjoy bounce houses and a wide variety of games on the back lawn, face painting, a cake walk, concessions, and basket raffles. Thank you also to the Lutheran Scholarship Granting Organization for their generous donation to help make this event a great success.
Eagle Treat Day
For the second Eagle Treat Day of the year, students were treated with a rice krispie square from NEST. It was PJ day for College Go Week, so most students were already dressed up. Any dollars donated that day went toward the chapel offering supporting LCMS missionaries.
Nelson’s Port-a-pit Chicken
The NEST volunteers sold Nelson’s chicken at the end of the month, and nearly sold out even without pre-selling tickets! Thank you to all who helped with the sales or came by to purchase chicken. The funds raised from this event will help to cover the costs of the various NEST events throughout the year.
If you’d like to help with a NEST event, or help with the planning/idea-creating portion of the events, join us at the next NEST meeting on October 21 at 4pm in the Ladies’ Lounge!
