A team of workers gathered for our “popup workday” on Monday, November 24, and within just a few hours they accomplished plenty of important work.

One duo made their way to the basement, replacing ceiling tiles damaged when a drain started to leak earlier this school year. The drain was repaired over fall break, but according to fire code the ceiling tiles must be in place when using the space.  THANKS!

Another crew moved into several classrooms replacing and insulating sagging drain lines that move water from a roof drain, through the inside of the ceiling, and then to the outside. Condensation on these drain lines is the primary challenge, when icy-cold water meets the warm air inside the pipe that is up near the ceiling. (By the way, one classroom still needs this work completed.) THANKS!

The duo in the basement finished up their task and then headed up to the school roof with brooms in an effort to eliminate leaves and other debris that can clog the aforementioned roof drains. It’s a simple task that needs to be completed at least once each fall, and now our roof should drain more completely this winter. THANKS!

The next week other volunteers headed to the church boiler room to replace an unsafe load center which controls power for exterior lights and outlets at the church. The new load center is in, but once spring comes there will be some work needed to install additional exterior lights and replace wires to several others. THANKS!

And then just recently a couple of other members took on the task of installing a new control valve for the cafeteria heating system, connecting it to an existing thermostat and improving efficiencies as we better control the heat in that room. THANKS!

St. John’s relies on the work of numerous volunteers to help maintain our buildings. In some cases paid professionals must do the work but in others skilled workers complete the task without pay.  If you would like to help with these and other similar tasks, please contact the church office.
