Our last major building project was undertaken 50 years ago. This means that there are a host of tasks that are necessary to maintain our older buildings. The current list is a diverse collection of ways that you can help at St. John’s!

• Clean Up/Clean Out: There is ALWAYS something that needs to be cleaned or organized at St. John’s. Recently volunteers were working to clean-up numerous items leftover from the Project Welcome efforts at church. But there is ALWAYS something to clean and organize … especially storage areas.  These include:
  • School Boiler Room (especially in the old incinerator room. Yes, our school has an old incinerator for trash that hasn’t been used in many, many years!)
  • Trustees Storage Room in the basement (a collection of miscellaneous items, many of which are no longer needed)
  • Gymnasium Storage Room (some trash, dust and other items as well as a collection of stuff that needs sorting)
  • Church janitor’s closet (some old cleaning supplies, paper goods, etc.)
  • Ladies’ Lounge (old electronics, patch cables and a collection of other items that need a new home, including the dumpster for some items)
• There are numerous smaller items that could use some work 
  • CEILING TILES: A plumber recently repaired some pipes in the ceiling of the school basement. Now that the work is complete we need a volunteer (or two) to replace damaged ceiling tiles. All that is needed is a straight-edge and a razor knife!
  • COVER PLATES: This summer, workers installed additional components for our access control system. There are more than a dozen electrical boxes that need a new cover. A screwdriver and step ladder (which we will provide) is really all that is necessary.
  • PAINTING: If it is not too cold, the posts from the old gate could be painted to match the new safety bollards. The posts no longer hold up a gate, but they provide additional protection from traffic hitting the new gate and posts.
• Assistance:
  • RETRACTABLE GATE: Skilled workers will lead a small crew to complete work for our new retractable gate, including the installation of an “exit loop” which means the gate will automatically open when a vehicle needs to exit the back parking area.
  • PIPE INSULATION: Roof drains help remove water from our school’s roof, but when cold water from snow melt comes through the pipe located near the ceiling, condensation can create problems. A skilled worker can train (or assist) several others with accomplishing this task.
