EAGLE UPDATES

The next two months are going to go by very quickly. In the first week of November our 3-8th grade students will be taking their first ILEARN Checkpoint Assessment for the school year. Please remember to get plenty of sleep and eat a good breakfast, high in protein and low in sugar that week. Practice tests are being given this last week of October, and if technology and attendance allows, most students will start the actual Checkpoint on Tuesday 11/04. I hope that the first quarter went well for everyone, and that school only gets better in the second quarter. Congratulations to our 5-8th graders who made the Honor Roll for Quarter 1.

Past Events:

9/26 - Port-a-Pit, Our Nelson’s fundraiser was a great success. We plan to have two of these a year moving forward. In the future we will likely not do presales, as the chicken sold out very quickly.

10/22 - Unity Day, On the 22nd St. John’s students gathered together in the gym for an anti-bullying assembly. Following the assembly the students returned to their classrooms to paint rocks orange. The students will be painting positive messages on the rocks for a future rock garden. The goal is to remind students that we need to work together to prevent bullying and unify together as a group to take the power back from anyone that would want to bully.

10/24 - Trunk-or-Treat, This year we had a great turn out for the event. Many participants, and plenty of candy was donated. If you did not have a trunk this year, please consider having a trunk or recruiting a family or friend to have a trunk for you next year.

Bible Studies
All are invited to join in one or multiple of the following!
Women's studies:
Wednesday 6pm: WOW (Women Of the Word)
All ladies are invited to discuss Luther's Small Catechism as we review what Lutherans confess. They meet in the Chapel, on Wednesdays 6-7:30pm.

Men’s study:
On Saturday, November 8th, the men will study a couple Psalms together. They will meet at 8:30 am in the Chapel.

Adult Sunday morning study:
Pastor Albers is leading a Bible study on Hebrews 11-12. These chapters, known as the Hall of Faith, will lead to a great discussion on what the example of past saints’ faith teach us and how our faith can be exhibited. They meet in the Ladies Lounge on Sundays after Connect service, around 10:45am.
The Eagles Volleyball team has improved each time they play. “You can see the improvement each time they take the floor”, states Coach Stelter. “When they first started, some could barely get their serves over or didn’t move to receive the serves. Now, they are getting serves over, moving for the ball and working together to try and get three hits. Some are even learning to be a little more aggressive at the net! It’s fun seeing them improve.”
They have won 3 matches and lost a few REALLY close matches going to a third game to 15 and losing by two points. The volleyball teams are finishing up their season. Their last game will be October 29th against Renaissance Academy held at the Armory in Michigan City. Game time starts at 5:00 for the younger team followed immediately by the older team.
Basketball permission slips will be coming out the first week of November for grades 4 through 8. Those slips will be due back by before Thanksgiving break. The number of teams St. John’s will have depends on the number of interested participants. All athletes must have a physical on file in the office in order to participate.
The Port-A-Pit and Bake Sale Fundraiser was a big success! We sold out very early! Thank you so much to all of the volunteers, talented bakers who made items for the bake sale, and to the St. John's families for the continued support in our NEST fundraisers.

Please join us at our next NEST meeting:
Wednesday, Nov 19 at 4:00pm

We will be discussing the upcoming Christmas Craft Day, Family Fun Nights, and much more!
This month, our Student Council members stayed busy serving both the school and church communities. They volunteered at the Port-a-Pit Chicken fundraiser supporting The NEST, where students helped encourage sales by waving to passing cars with signs and assisted with cleanup after the event.
The Student Council also helped at the Trunk or Treat, handing out candy and distributing fliers about our school to families in attendance. In addition, students created thoughtful cards for the sick, spreading kindness and encouragement to those in need.
To wrap up the month, the Council took on a leadership role by planning the themed outfits for Red Ribbon Week, promoting school spirit and healthy choices. We’re proud of their dedication and service
ILEARN checkpoint 1 will be given this month. The State of Indiana DOE has prepared a document for families to share with them the content that will be assessed at each checkpoint.

Also, the following site has many suggestions for families to help in preparing students for standardized testing, along with the following suggestions for the week of the test.

During the week of testing, you can:
  • Be punctual. Stay aware of the testing schedule and make sure that your child is at school on time on testing days.
  • Get healthy sleep. Ensure that your child has gone to bed on time the night before so they’re well rested.
  • Serve up a good meal. Make a healthy breakfast, including protein and healthy fat, to curb hunger during the testing session.
  • Listen intently. Encourage kids to listen to and follow all directions given by the test administrator. If they have questions, they need to be addressed before testing begins.
  • Take a timeout. Teach your child how to take “brain breaks” by stopping for a minute and taking a few deep breaths to help reduce test anxiety.
  • Plan a treat for when testing is complete. This could be something as simple as a pizza and movie night or a weekend outing to a local park.
High stakes testing can be taxing, but with positive reinforcement children will be inspired to do their best!
