EAGLE UPDATES

The end of the school year has reached us. It is with sad feelings that I know this is the last year for some of our family to attend St. John’s. With that said, Miss Campbell has been working hard inviting new family members that are registering for next school year. I want to acknowledge two of our graduating 8th graders:
This year’s Valedictorian: Ian Roule.
Ian lives in La Porte with his parents Mark and Sydney Roule. He attends LaPorte Assembly of God. Ian has been attending St. Johns for 11 years, and will be moving on to LaPorte High School next year. Ian enjoys playing musical instruments, playing basketball, football, and video games. After high school he plans to attend college.
This year’s Salutatorian: Sophi Skalka.
Sophi lives in LaPorte with her parents Steve and Cindy Skalka. She attends St. Mary’s in Otis. Sophi has been attending St. John’s for 11 years, and will be moving on to Marquette Catholic High School next year. Sophi enjoys playing travel baseball and softball. She loves going to tournaments with her team (the RA Lady Rebels) and to watch the Dodgers play. After high school she plans to attend Arizona State University in Phoenix, Arizona.
We pray for a successful transition for all our 8th grade students as they move on to high school next year and beyond. We pray that God sees everyone safely and enjoyably through the summer, and we look forward to seeing you again in August.
Be Blessed,
Greg Alberding

Career Day - On April 24th, grades 5, 6, 7, & 8 attended our annual Career Day in the Gymnasium. We had a great turn out of professionals attending this year. We are working on establishing relationships with many different people and businesses so that we can plan a rotation and students see different faces and professions from one year to the next.

Project Night - May 1st saw a successful project night focusing on the Social Studies curriculum. We are discussing adding a Middle School Science Fair Night next year.

Teacher & Staff Appreciation - NEST did an AMAZING job celebrating our staff this year. Dress up days, food, gifts, and student messages all added to a wonderful week of appreciation.

Middle School Dance - Formally known as the 8th grade dance, the 6-8th grade students had a great time with food, music, and pictures. Parents and staff did a great job putting this event together.

Final Eagle Treat Day - We had a PJ and popcorn treat day for our 4th quarter offerings.

Field Trips - Today 3rd and 4th grades went to “The Shrine” in Crown Point. This Friday we have K-8 going to Bremen Field Day.

Spring Concert - Thank you to all that attended our Spring Concert. The students did a wonderful job singing the program that Ms. Rosselli put together for us. It was a JOY to hear the students in this last school-wide performance of the year.

Pre-K and Kindergarten Graduation - The Pre-K and Kindergarten classes were celebrated for completing their year, and rejoiced in looking forward to next year’s opportunities.

8th Grade Visited LaPorte High School - Our 8th grade students visited LPHS and were led on a short tour of the building that some of them will spend the next four years of their schooling.

LaPorte High School Seniors visited St. John’s - LPHS seniors that attended St. John’s had the opportunity to visit the school and walk the halls one more time before their high school graduation. It was wonderful listening to their stories as they reminisced together pouring over old yearbooks and talking with former teachers.

Kona Ice - On May 27th NEST provided Kona Ice for all of our students to help celebrate the ending of another great year at St. John’s.

St. John’s Field Day - On Friday May 29th, St. John’s celebrated the end of the school year with an afternoon of games on the field.

NEST would like to send a huge thank you to our amazing SJLS staff and families for their support with our Port-A-Pit Fundraiser this month and all of the fundraisers and Family Events this 2025-2026 school year! Your presence and enthusiasm at these events truly strengthen our school community and show our students how much we value their education, together!

We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to our NEST Co-Chair Kati Stone for her commitment to NEST over the last 2 school years! Her enthusiasm energized the team, her support was foundational to our progress, and her dedication to our mission was exemplary. Thank you for your outstanding leadership in NEST. Kati will be stepping down as Co-Chair after this school year. We are sad to see her go!

The Student Council finished up the school year with a fun pizza party to celebrate all of their hard work and accomplishments throughout the year. After enjoying a meal together, students played kickball and practiced for their upcoming chapel service that will take place on the last day of school.
Student Council members also volunteered at the Nelson’s Port-A-Pit Chicken fundraiser by waving signs and helping bag chicken orders for customers. Their willingness to serve and help others was a wonderful example of teamwork and school spirit.

Enjoy the summer, work hard, and play harder. My tip for the month would be to find some routine for the students during the summer. In the link below you can find several ideas on planning a routine that you might find helpful. I know from my own experience that the best laid plans often go asunder, but that doesn’t mean I won't keep trying to help my kids with some summer structure. Perhaps you will be more successful than I have been in the past. Perhaps I will be more successful this year. Have a great summer.

Key takeaways

  • A summer schedule helps bring structure to long, unstructured days, which can reduce boredom and the familiar “I’m bored” refrain. It also supports learning retention and emotional well-being by balancing play, rest and consistent routines.
  • Effective summer routines don’t need to be rigid — they should reflect each child’s personality, energy level and the family’s daily realities. Including a mix of essential tasks, reading, creative play, outdoor time and exploration helps kids stay engaged while still feeling flexible and fun.
  • Different scheduling styles — hour-by-hour plans, themed days or simple checklists — can all work depending on how much structure a child needs. Involving kids in planning their routine helps them feel ownership and makes it more likely they’ll follow through.
