EAGLE UPDATES

As a parent I was confused why we attended school at St. John’s, but had the Monday after Easter off. After talking with Pastor Albers, I came to understand that having the students in school provided them a valuable opportunity to attend a Good Friday service during the school day. So if you are like me, and wondering why our calendar looks a little different from a public school, and we are here on Good Friday, know now that it is so our students can attend the Good Friday service at St. John’s Lutheran Church. If you did not join us this year, remember that parents and families are always welcome to our weekly chapel service at 8:15 on Wednesdays, and everyone is invited to church services like Maude Thursday and Good Friday.

Be Blessed,
Greg Alberding

p.s. doors are locked before and during Wednesday chapel services. Please call the school office if you are planning to attend so that you can be let in. I am usually there letting parents in between 8:10-8:20.

Past Events:

Eagle Egg Hunt - NEST had the first annual Eagle Egg Hunt on March 27th. We plan to make this an annual event, and are already discussing improvements for next year.

Maude Thursday and Good Friday - Select classes attended Maude service on Thursday 4/2. All classes attended services at the Church on Good Friday 4/3. Next year we will not have our usual Wednesday chapel services for Ash Wednesday and the Wednesday of Good Friday. Instead, students will attend the Church service offered for Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

Tee/Jeans & Treat Day was our first eagle treat day for 4th quarter offerings. Next year I plan to schedule 8 Eagle treat days, 2 per quarter for our chapel offerings. Hopefully one with popcorn and one with a different treat to mix it up a little.

Donuts with Grownups - All comments that I have heard about were positive. Another successful event. We will plan to continue with this single event that hopefully all students can participate in. Next year it will be a little earlier, before Spring Break.

He has Risen Parties - On April 17th, classes celebrated Easter with “He has Risen” parties in their classrooms. When providing treats for classroom celebrations, please try to be in compliance with our healthy snacks wellness policy.

ILEARN grades 3-8 - ILEARN started with Practice testing on April 21st, and will complete with makeups on May 8th.

Career Day - On April 24th, grades 5, 6, 7, & 8 attended our annual Career Day in the Gymnasium. We had a great turn out of professionals attending this year. We are working on establishing relationships with many different people and businesses so that we can plan a rotation and students see different faces and professions from one year to the next. Thank you, Amanda Alberding, for organizing Career Day this year.
Worship is in the church sanctuary: Saturdays at 6pm and Sundays at 8am.
Worship is in the school cafeteria: ‘Connect’ service is on Sundays at 9:30am.
During Connect service students can join Kid’s Connect, to do a Bible lesson and craft during the sermon and then re-join the end of the worship service.

Bible studies open to school parents to join:
  • Women’s study on David - Tuesdays at 10am in the Chapel
  • Women’s study on the book of James - Wednesdays at 6-7:30pm in the Chapel
  • Adult study on Matthew - Sundays at 10:45am in the Ladies’ Lounge
  • Men’s study on the weekend’s Scripture readings - Saturday, May 9th at 8:30am in the Chapel
On Tuesday, March 24th, the Intramural Floor Hockey began for those students in grades 4 through 8. They played every Tuesday and Wednesday right after school until 3:45 PM, except for over spring break. They played until April 15th and we had 10 students that participated.

Tuesday, April 21st, we started our Intramural Badminton. We have 16 students in grades 4 through 8th grade sign up to participate. They are playing a round robin type of tournament on Tuesdays and a triple elimination tournament on Wednesdays. The last day for badminton will be on Wednesday, May 6th.

Miss Stelter is contemplating on having Intramural Kickball for the last three Wednesdays only, she will take a quick survey of the students in grades 4-8 to see if it is feasible.
We hope you all have been enjoying our NEST events this year! We love to see our SJLS families spending time together outside of school, too. Thank you to all who attended and helped with our Eagle Egg Hunt and Donuts with Grown-ups!

Student Council members made get-well cards for church members in need of encouragement, sharing kindness and compassion at their monthly meeting.
They also completed their monthly service project by filling baskets with snacks for our local EMS. In honor of First Responder Month in May, students chose this as a meaningful way to give back and show appreciation for those who serve our community each day. Each basket included heartfelt thank-you cards created by the students. Photos of the completed baskets are attached.
The Student Council will be hosting a Coin War during the month of May. Students are encouraged to participate as classes compete to collect the most money. The winning class will earn a special reward of an ice cream treat and extra recess.
All proceeds from the Coin War will go toward the charity selected for this month’s chapel offerings, providing students with another opportunity to give back and make a positive impact.

Don’t panic! Here at St. John’s Lutheran Church and School we don’t ever want a financial barrier to be the reason that a family doesn’t enroll their children. While we have worked to restructure our financial aid and scholarships, your estimate for the 2026-27 academic school year may cause you to panic for a moment. It is truly a struggle for some families to make ends meet. Before jumping to the idea that you will simply have to go somewhere else, please contact the school office to go over your financial aid options! We would love to sit with you and your family and discuss any concerns or help you may need to gear up for the upcoming school year!
