Have you taken a trip to St. John’s Cemetery lately?  The City of La Porte has decided it’s important to have sidewalks connecting the high school to the intersection of 10th and A streets. Work is still underway, but sidewalks are being installed, complete with ramp access at each intersection.  In the meantime, there may be some issues with the driveways while they complete the work, but you can still access the cemetery from the C street entrances.

St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery was established shortly after the church was founded when eight acres of land was purchased from A.P. and Viola Andrews in April 1870.  At that time the church was located on A Street at its intersection with 3rd Street, just about six blocks north of the cemetery. Then, in the 1880s Mr. Meinrad Rumely, the founder of the implement company in La Porte, approached St. John’s on behalf of St. Joseph Catholic Parish to purchase the south portion (3 acres) to use as a Catholic cemetery.

St. John’s continues to ensure the cemetery is kept up and a volunteer is currently in the process of organizing the old files left by our previous sexton (the person who oversees the cemetery records of plots).
